‘Sexting’ refers to the practice of taking a photo of oneself in a naked or semi-naked state, and sharing it via mobile phone with a boyfriend or girlfriend.
Young girls in particular are often put under pressure to engage in such activities, and can find themselves in serious trouble if their photos are then shown to other teens, or posted on social media.
It’s illegal to send these photos if the person photographed is under the age of 17 – yet Garda Murphy says parents and schools in Kerry are reluctant to report the matter.
